NYSE

New York Stock Exchange

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is a US exchange where shares trade in US dollars. UK and Canadian brokers commonly offer online access, but dealing, currency conversion and custody charges vary by provider.

Dealing considerations

Identify the exchange

NYSE, NYSE American and NYSE Arca are separate exchanges within NYSE Group. NYSE American focuses on smaller companies, while NYSE Arca mainly trades exchange-traded products. Check the exchange attached to the company’s ticker when confirming broker access.

Allow for trading hours and settlement

The NYSE’s core session runs from 9:30am to 4pm Eastern Time, with closures on US market holidays. Check your broker’s dealing hours: AJ Bell, for example, says online US quotes are generally available from 2:30pm to 9pm UK time on UK business days. Most US trades settle one business day after dealing, known as T+1, so allow for that delay when working back from a perk’s qualifying date.

Check charges, tax forms and account eligibility

Alongside dealing charges, compare the cost of converting currency and holding the shares. US dividends can be subject to withholding tax; ask your broker which form it needs to apply any treaty reduction available to you. Confirm that your chosen account can hold the shares too.

Check whose name appears on the register

Some UK routes use CREST Depository Interests (CDIs), which AJ Bell describes as UK securities representing an underlying interest in an overseas security. Ask your broker whose name the shares will be registered in, and check whether the issuer accepts your proof of ownership or requires the shares to be registered in your name.

Check how easily the share trades

The NYSE’s entry requirements cover shareholder numbers, publicly held shares, share price and financial tests. They do not tell you how easily you can buy or sell a particular share today. Check its trading volume and the gap between buying and selling prices.

Brokers and charges

Compare the dealing terms below for selected brokers. Before buying, check the issuer’s eligibility rules and ask your broker what help it provides with the claim.
