McDonald’s Japan

Meal voucher booklets

What shareholders get Free meal voucher booklets

The vouchers exchange for eligible menu items, rather than deducting a fixed yen amount from the bill.

From 100 shares

McDonald’s Holdings Company (Japan) is the listed parent of the company running McDonald’s restaurants in Japan.

What you get

The perk is a booklet of paper meal vouchers, with separate coupons for burgers, sides and drinks. The first booklet takes at least a year to qualify for, and you use it at restaurants in Japan.

Each booklet contains six burger vouchers, six side vouchers and six drink vouchers. Use one of each together for a meal, or tear them out and use them separately. A qualifying holding of 100–299 shares receives one booklet twice a year.

What it takes

You need at least 100 McDonald’s Holdings Company (Japan) shares listed in Tokyo (2702) on 30 June and 31 December each year, after meeting the one-year holding condition.

Minimum holding period: At least one year: 100 or more shares must appear under the same shareholder number on three consecutive June and December registers.

Before buyingA perk is a minor benefit of owning a share, not a reason to buy one. Share prices fall as well as rise, and dealing costs, spreads and tax can exceed a perk’s value. Read about the risks.

Holding through a broker

Shares must be registered in your own name.

The company checks its shareholder register and the continuity of the shareholder number. Its public terms do not confirm an overseas pooled-nominee route. Ask your broker whether you appear on that register and receive the vouchers; we have not tested its service.

McDonald’s Japan does not say whether overseas shareholders can claim.

  2. 2. Receive the paper bookletsKeep your registered address current through your securities company. The vouchers arrive by post after the qualifying June or December register.
  3. 3. Order with a member of staffPresent the vouchers at a participating McDonald’s in Japan. Delivery, mobile orders and self-order kiosks do not accept them.

A Happy Meal uses all three

Exchange one burger voucher, one side voucher and one drink voucher together for one Happy Set, the Japanese Happy Meal.

Company story

A department-store beginning

Japan’s first McDonald’s opened on 20 July 1971 on the ground floor of the Mitsukoshi department store in Ginza, Tokyo. Its opening menu already included the Big Mac, Filet-O-Fish, fries, apple pie and shakes.

The menu later acquired local favourites. The company introduced the Teriyaki McBurger in 1989 and the Tsukimi burger in 1991, inspired by Japan’s autumn moon-viewing custom. The shareholder voucher follows the current set menu, including eligible seasonal products, so the meal need not be the same each visit.
