Half the Flex fare need not be JAL’s cheapest price. Compare the final cost of the available fares.
Plus 2 other benefitsJapan Airlines, usually called JAL, operates domestic and international flights. The group also runs regional airlines, travel services and the JAL Mileage Bank loyalty programme.
What you get
JAL gives shareholders discount vouchers for domestic Flex fares, smaller discounts on package holidays and an annual award of e JAL points, with the first points due in 2027.
Domestic flight discount vouchers
Each voucher gives 50% off the applicable JAL Group domestic Flex fare for one person on one one-way sector. A holding of 100–199 shares earns one voucher a year, from the March register.
Which flights qualify
The vouchers cover domestic routes operated by Japan Airlines, Japan Air Commuter, Japan Transocean Air and Ryukyu Air Commuter. They do not cover international flights. Shareholder seats are limited, and some flights offer none. The discount has no blackout dates, including holiday peaks.
Children and premium seats
For an ordinary-class seat, the discount uses the Flex fare labelled Type B. Children receive 75% off that applicable fare. First Class and Class J can also be booked with shareholder vouchers, subject to availability.
Annual e JAL points
JAL’s new shareholder award gives 1,000 e JAL points at the entry tier, with larger awards for larger holdings. Each point pays ¥1 towards eligible flights or tours bought on JAL’s website. The first cycle began with the September 2026 register, and JAL expects to credit points around May after the following March check.

Individual shareholders must register on the shareholder website and link a JAL Mileage Bank number by the end of February. The registered details must match and pass verification.
Before buyingA perk is a minor benefit of owning a share, not a reason to buy one. Share prices fall as well as rise, and dealing costs, spreads and tax can exceed a perk’s value. Read about the risks.
Holding through a broker
Shares must be registered in your own name.
JAL establishes entitlement through its shareholder records. Its public guidance does not confirm a route for an overseas broker’s pooled nominee account. Ask your provider whether you receive a JAL shareholder number and can use the shareholder website; we have not tested a broker route.
How to claim
Domestic flight discount vouchers
The shareholder website asks for your eight-digit shareholder number and registered postcode. Online voucher delivery also requires a verified match with your JAL Mileage Bank account.
- 1. Choose paper or online deliveryJAL posts vouchers to the registered address, or supplies codes through its shareholder website. For online delivery, register your JAL Mileage Bank number and select that option by the end of February for the May issue, or the end of August for the November issue.
- 2. Compare fares before bookingSelect the shareholder fare in JAL’s domestic booking service and compare its final price with other fares for the same flight. The discount applies to Flex, so another fare may cost less.
- 3. Use your voucher codeFollow JAL’s booking instructions and pay within the purchase deadline shown on the reservation. Check both your voucher’s travel dates and the airline ticket’s validity.
Annual e JAL points
The individual shareholder’s registered details must match the linked JAL Mileage Bank membership. JAL does not award points when verification fails.
- 1. Check that you met the September conditionThe first cycle began on 30 September 2026. Shares bought after 28 September 2026 missed that cycle; the next starting register for a new holder is September 2027.
- 2. Link your mileage accountRegister on JAL’s shareholder website and add your matching JAL Mileage Bank number by the following February deadline.
- 3. Keep the holding through MarchMaintain the holding under the same shareholder number through the March check. JAL plans to credit qualifying accounts around May.

Practical notes
Domestic flight discount vouchers
JAL does not post vouchers abroad
JAL’s FAQ says it sends paper vouchers only to the registered address and does not dispatch them overseas. JAL also offers online codes to verified shareholders. Neither route tells you whether an overseas broker can get your holding onto JAL’s register.
Someone else can use the voucher
JAL’s vouchers carry no shareholder name, so another person can use one. JAL does not replace lost or stolen vouchers, exchange them for another benefit, or refund the voucher itself.
Do not combine discounts
JAL does not allow the shareholder voucher to be combined with other discount fares, miles or coupons.

Check the booking cutoff
Domestic dynamic packages normally close at 4:59pm on the day before departure. Overseas dynamic packages and package tours normally close five days before departure, counted back from the day before departure, or seven days for Europe and America. JAL says individual tours may have different deadlines.

Company story
An airline without its own aircraft
JAL began scheduled flights in 1951 without aircraft or pilots of its own. Northwest Airlines supplied both for the Tokyo–Osaka–Fukuoka route. JAL’s history says the Japanese flag was painted onto a tail fin the night before an invitational flight.
The airline began operating its own flights a year later. Its unpressurised DC-4 cabins had no air conditioning, so JAL installed electric fans for the summer heat.
