JR East
Rail discount vouchers, Long-term holder rail voucher, Shopping, hotel and leisure coupons
Rail vouchers start at 300 shares, or 100 held for two years. A separate service-coupon set starts at 100 shares without that wait.
Plus 2 other benefitsEast Japan Railway Company, usually called JR East, runs railways across the Tokyo metropolitan area, northern Kanto, Koshinetsu and Tohoku. Its business includes both Shinkansen and conventional trains.
What you get
JR East gives shareholders rail vouchers and a separate set of shopping, hotel and leisure coupons. The service coupons start at 100 shares. Rail vouchers take 40% off eligible fares and train supplements on JR East’s own network; a through train can continue into another operator’s territory, where this discount stops.
Rail discount vouchers
Each voucher gives 40% off an eligible one-way basic fare, train supplement or both within JR East’s network. A holding of 300–399 shares earns one voucher a year. Ordinary Green Car and limited-express charges can qualify.
Long-term holder rail voucher
Shareholders get 40% off eligible JR East fares and supplements.
One extra voucher each year
A qualifying long-term holder receives one additional rail discount voucher each year. This gives holders of 100–299 shares a route to a rail voucher; larger holdings receive it on top of the ordinary allocation. It follows the same use conditions as the regular rail voucher.
Shopping, hotel and leisure coupons
Every holder of at least 100 shares on the March register receives one service-coupon set a year, under the rules introduced for the June 2026 issue. This benefit does not require the two-year holding period for the extra rail voucher. The 2026 set includes hotel, restaurant, museum and station-shopping offers; each coupon has its own conditions.
Examples from the 2026 issue
The set includes six hotel discounts of roughly 10%–20% off public room-only or breakfast-inclusive rates; three uses of 10% off participating restaurants and bars at Tokyo Station Hotel, Mesm Tokyo and Metropolitan Hotels; two half-price admissions each to the Railway Museum and Tokyo Station Gallery; and three ¥100 discounts on onboard hot coffee on eligible trains.
An extra ticket from 2,000 shares
Holders of at least 2,000 shares also receive one health check-up discount ticket. The public allocation page does not state its discount amount; use the ticket’s own terms.

Before buyingA perk is a minor benefit of owning a share, not a reason to buy one. Share prices fall as well as rise, and dealing costs, spreads and tax can exceed a perk’s value. Read about the risks.
Holding through a broker
Shares must be registered in your own name.
JR East determines entitlement from its shareholder register. Its public terms do not confirm an overseas pooled-nominee or foreign-address route. Ask your broker whether your holding reaches the register and whether it delivers benefit documents; we have not tested its service.
JR East does not say whether overseas shareholders can claim.

Practical notes
Rail discount vouchers
The railway boundary matters
A journey continuing onto another JR company’s tracks needs separate tickets for the discounted JR East section and the other section. JR East warns that splitting the journey this way can cost more than buying the ordinary through ticket.
Keep the voucher after booking
A voluntary refund does not restore the voucher, including an Eki-net refund. JR East can restore it after a refund caused by cancellation or delay, but requires the original voucher and the purchased tickets. Lost or stolen vouchers are not reissued.
Holiday peaks are allowed
The voucher can be used during Golden Week, Obon and New Year, and for journeys of 200km or less.

NewDays registration for 2026 has closed
The 2026 set offers 5% off NewDays purchases through the NewDays app. Holders had to install the app, register and complete the dedicated form by 31 August 2026. Those who met that deadline can use the coupon until 30 June 2027; the published offer is not open to a new registration now.

Company story
One train can cross two companies
JR East began on 1 April 1987 in the transition from Japanese National Railways to JR. Its history soon expanded beyond trains: the Tokyo Station Gallery opened in 1988, followed that year by a station convenience store at Shinagawa.
The rail voucher still follows the railway company’s boundary. On the Hokuriku Shinkansen, it discounts the section between Tokyo and Joetsu-Myoko. The route beyond Joetsu-Myoko towards Kanazawa and Tsuruga belongs to JR West, even when the passenger stays on the same train. That distinction explains why a shareholder voucher does not necessarily make a through journey cheaper.
